Chapter

Twenty-One

Kaiven

“We don’t have time for this,” one of the mercenaries said gruffly from the open door. “Manson won’t wait for us.”

My fingers buzzed as I clutched my axe in one hand and held Thea with the other. If I needed to move fast, I could spin her behind me when I attacked, but for now I enjoyed the feel of her warm skin through the sheer fabric of her outfit. I fought the twin emotions of desire and fury as I waited to strike the enemy, my heart racing from the scent of Thea and the softness of her skin, but also from the anticipation of drawing blood. The combination of bloodlust and carnal hunger was so intoxicating that my cock throbbed, and I almost swayed on the spot, but I bit my bottom lip to keep me focused while also reminding myself that Thea was the last female I should want.

“I’m not going onto an alien planet that looks like it’s crawling with creatures without a laser rifle.”

So, we were on a planet. I didn’t breathe as I waited for either of the fighters to step into the room.

“We won’t be out there long. Manson said we gotta track down those pods, get the prisoners back, and then head back to Jarvelon.”

“Which means the blasters we have will do fine. You know Manson’s already leading the search party. If we don’t hurry, we’ll be left behind, and then we will have to worry about alien creatures.”

The other mercenary spat out a curse before he closed the door without stepping inside. I didn’t move until I was sure they’d moved away from the room.

Thea twisted from my grasp before I released her, her brown eyes blazing. “What was that?”

I suspected from her anger that she wasn’t talking about the mercenaries, but I didn’t know what had provoked her ire. “What?”

She stepped closer to me and pointed the blaster in my face. “Just because I’m dressed like this, doesn’t mean I’m yours to touch.”

I opened my mouth to bite back that I’d been trying to protect her, but then I realized that I’d stroked my fingers down her skin absently as I’d been waiting to strike. I hadn’t even done it consciously, but as the torrent of blood lust and arousal had battled within me, my hand had caressed her skin. It had just felt so right.

Shame washed over me. “You are right. It will not happen again.”

My admission made her lean back and frown, the anger in her eyes fading. “Okay, then.”

“Can we go take the ship now?” Koop shifted from one leg to the other. “It might not take them long to locate those pods.”

“He’s right.” Thea waved her blaster at me. “You should still go first.”

Without another word, I rushed from the room with my battle axe at the ready. The mercenaries who’d been outside the weapons storeroom were gone, as were most of the crew. As we raced through the ship, I struck down any mercenary in our path without question, and Thea and Koop jumped over the bodies that I left crumpled in my wake.
